Course Description:

Gender balance in Hollywood and other studio film communities is off-kilter. Although women directors historically have had better success in independent cinema, in 2018 women directed only a small fraction of the dozens of movies released by studios and, in recent years, women made up fewer than one-third of professionals in the field.

In this film course, we will view and discuss six movies from women filmmakers who have made their imprint and are appropriately classified in the auteur theory. The films are from multiple countries, were made over the last half-century, and are diverse in approach and subject matter. Directors and films presented are: Elaine May, "The Heartbreak Kid," 1972, US; Jane Campion, "The Piano," 1993, New Zealand; Mira Nair, "Monsoon Wedding," 2001, India; Sofia Coppola, "Lost in Translation," 2003, US; Susanne Bier, "After the Wedding," 2006, Denmark; Greta Gerwig, "Lady Bird," 2017, US.
