Course Description:

Tennessee Williams dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s with masterpieces such as "The Glass Menagerie," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and, most memorably, "A Streetcar Named Desire." His plays sent audiences 'zowing to mad heights' while they brought him a 'catastrophe of success.' Intimate, confessional and autobiographical, he found inspiration in his family and lovers, mining his own life deeply, sometimes self-destructively. The playwright and his work often identified strongly with his heroines, through whom he explored a refracted and heterosexualized portrait of his own life. We will view and discuss the legendary film adaptation starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh, and explore aspects of the writer's career.
