Course Description:

Dec. 4: The History of American Furniture

From the British-inspired elegance of early American furniture styles to the hip modernity of Mid-Century Modern design, American furniture has simultaneously charted its own course while incorporating the design influences of many other cultures and countries. This course will examine the influence of individual furniture makers and various furniture styles including Jacobean, Federal, Greek Revival, Victorian, Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, and Mid-Century Modern, and reveal the social and political influences behind these designs. Construction techniques and types of materials including fabrics, woods, and decorative elements will also be discussed.

Dec. 11: In Celebration of Ceilings

From tile to trompe l'oeil, artists have created some of the most breathtaking images in telling stories of mythology, religion and history in the decorative work, as they embellished ceilings in a variety of settings, from the Sistine Chapel to office buildings to Gilded Age mansions. These grand spaces were intricately crafted to impress wealth, status and position. This session offers insight into the various techniques and motifs of the historical eras in which these works of art were created.
