Course Description:

Butterfly expert Chris Tenney introduces us to a local "celebrity," the Monarch butterfly. We'll also learn about the other 90 species that fly in our area, from common backyard butterflies to exotic descendants of tropical species. Chris will also discuss some common misconceptions shared by casual butterfly watchers. This course includes a lecture and a follow up field trip to Arroyo Seco.

Field: We'll meet at the junction of Piney Creek Road and East Carmel Valley Road, approximately 6 miles north of Arroyo Seco Road. The drive takes about one hour from Salinas via Highway 101 and Arroyo Seco Road, and about one hour from Carmel via Carmel Valley Road. We will make two stops: a 2-mile round-trip walk along a fire road and a nearby 1/4-mile trail walk.
