Course Description:

The films of renowned director Terrence Malick reflect a singular vision in American cinema. The Midwestern-born Texas transplant has produced just ten films in a career spanning over half a century, but each one has reverberated over the decades with widening significance for those patient enough to wait. Philosophical questions of morality, free will, and our place in the universe thread through Malick's work like a winding river, flanked by cinematic meditations on the transcendent power and beauty of nature. Known for launching the careers of Sissy Spacek, Martin Sheen, Sam Shepard, and others, Malick's films have garnered major international awards, including the Golden Bear at Berlin, the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and several Academy Award nominations. This course will feature four films from his body of work: "Badlands" (1973); "Days of Heaven" (1978); "The Thin Red Line" (1998); and "A Hidden Life" (2019). We'll view these films on our own prior to class.
