Course Description:This semester, we explore four films made from major musicals written by two legendary composers with vastly different styles: Charles Strouse and Leonard Bernstein. Each film reflects the era in which it was created. From Strouse, we'll watch and discuss "Bye Bye Birdie," with lyrics by Lee Adams, and "Annie," with lyrics by Martin Charnin. Then, we'll view two classics by Bernstein, composed nearly 15 years apart: "On the Town," with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and "West Side Story," with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. We plan to return to the historic Lighthouse Cinema in Pacific Grove to watch these musicals on the big screen, with popcorn, snacks and drinks available for purchase. |
