Course Description:

Our armchair travels and exploration of crime fiction from around the globe next transport us to Cuba, the big-hearted Caribbean nation with a complicated history. We will begin with "Havana Blue" (2000), part of the acclaimed Havana Quartet by Leonardo Padura, featuring an obstreperous detective wrestling with life questions during the Castro era. "Queen of Bone" (2019), by Havana-born expat Teresa Dovalpage, centers around a Cuba refugee and his American wife, who return to his native country only to encounter a death tied to the past. As we read and dissect these compelling mystery narratives in our lively online discussions, we will search for cultural and political characteristics that make each uniquely Cuban and also how the books fit into the expansive canvas of crime fiction.
