Course Description:
Oct. 21: The Economics and History of Taxation
Covering the fascinating history of taxation, with a main focus on the United States, Dr. Henderson will present how economists of various persuasions think about taxation and will show that who writes the check is not necessarily who bears the burden of the tax. He'll also compare various kinds of taxes—the pros and cons—and will explain why all taxes create a deadweight loss. In addition, he'll reveal the thinking behind the Laffer Curve and its ties to U.S. economic policy.
Oct. 28: Money and Monetary Policy
An illuminating exploration of why money exists and the various forms of money that have been used over time. Dr. Henderson will examine the connection between growth in the money supply and inflation. He'll also reveal the problems with the U.S. monetary system that led key politicians and bankers to favor a central bank and will consider whether the Federal Reserve was the best way to deal with those issues.
