Course Description:

Feb 11: Human Progress
Standards of living were flat for many centuries and then grew dramatically in the 19th century and even more in the 20th century, rising sharply like the blade of a hockey stick. In this session, we'll explore the facts about the hockey stick and the main explanations offered by economists for its existence.

Feb 18: The Economics of Socialism
A substantial percentage of young people have come to believe in socialism. We'll examine what socialism is and isn’t, and whether it works to make the majority of people better off.

Feb 25: Federal Budget Deficits and Debt
The U.S. government will likely have deficits approaching $2 trillion annually for the next 10 years. These annual additions to federal debt will soon drive the publicly held debt to well over 100 percent of GDP. Dr. Henderson considers how we got into this situation and where we are likely headed unless Congress and the president impose fiscal discipline. He'll also bring to light various measures that could lessen the problem.
