Course Description:

In this four-part series, we will discuss the social activism and writing of five remarkable women who were essential to their partner’s creativity. These women were creative and intellectually gifted in their own right and their lives intersected politically and socially in the 1930s and 1940s as they participated in a group of liberal spirits living in San Francisco, Los Gatos and Carmel. The women include Carol (and John) Steinbeck (married 1930-1943); Toni Jackson (and Ed Ricketts, partners from 1940-1948); Una (and Robinson) Jeffers (married from 1913-1950); Ella Winter (partner of Lincoln Steffens from 19241936); and, Sara Bard Field (partner of Charles Erskine Scott Wood from 1918-1944). Through poetry, letters, articles, and diary entries, we'll examine the lives and works of these formidable women as well as other bohemian figures whose paths intersected with theirs along the way.
