Course Description:In 1987, British broadcaster Bryan Magee presented a second collection of philosophical interviews for BBC Television entitled "The Great Philosophers." "The Daily Telegraph" had hailed his earlier series for achieving "the near-impossible feat of presenting to a mass audience recondite issues of philosophy without compromising intellectual integrity or losing ratings." "The Great Philosophers" continued this tradition while focusing attention on the history of philosophy. In this seminar, we will screen four of these classic interviews dealing with modern thinkers who shaped contemporary thought. The viewings will be followed by an engaging discussion. Join us for Peter Singer on Hegel and Marx, J.P. Stern on Friedrich Nietzsche, Hubert Dreyfus on Heidegger, and John Searle on Ludwig Wittgenstein. No reading is required. |
