Course Description:Women have been leading figures in every artistic movement from the Italian Renaissance to American Modernism and beyond. However, when listing the artists who "define" the art-historical canon, Giotto, Botticelli, Titian, da Vinci, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Manet, Gauguin, Pollock, and other males are typically named. Who would recognize: Anguissola, Fontana, Peeters, Gentileschi, Kauffman, Asawa, Krasner, and Mendieta? By weaving our way through history, we'll uncover the strength, character and talent of some of the world's greatest female artists who achieved excellence against all odds. |
