History of U.S. Science Policy | In Person (Ryan Ranch) (Closed)

Course Description:

The history of public support for science will be traced from the provisions of the Constitution protecting inventions through the great expansion of scientific and technology research associated with World War II. President Franklin D. Roosevelt commissioned a panel of distinguished leaders of science, education and industry to chart a way to capture for civilian use the scientific progress made during the war. The committee produced the influential report, "Science, The Endless Frontier." The recommendations of this report have framed and influenced subsequent policy to this day. The role of Congress, the president, the regulatory agencies, state governments, and the scientists themselves in developing science policy will be discussed. Examples will focus on biomedical research and emerging technologies such as stem cells, gene editing and artificial intelligence.
