Course Description:The immune system is an amazing evolutionary adaptation to life on a planet we share with myriad potentially deadly germs. In this course, we will explore the nature of the immune system, the history of how we came to understand its workings, and the role of immunity in health and disease. The first session will focus on basic concepts of immunity, the functions of the innate and adaptive immune responses, and the extraordinary functional design of the antibody molecule. The second lecture will address two great mysteries of immunity that have been solved by pioneering research during our lifetimes. During our final meeting, we'll look at several contemporary practical applications of immunology such as blood groups and transfusions, vaccines, and cancer immunotherapy. |
