Course Description:

Next stop on our global tour of crime fiction lands us in Scotland. We'll begin in Glasgow with William McIlvanney’s "Laidlaw" (1977), considered by many to be the first example of Tartan Noir. Then we head to Edinburgh and the first in the much-loved series by Ian Rankin—"Knots and Crosses" (1987)—featuring Detective Inspector John Rebus, a former member of the SAS and now a city cop who hides his memories and routinely misses promotions. We'll read and dissect these compelling mystery narratives in lively discussions, exploring ways in which each reflects its Scottish cultural origins, while considering how and why Caledonian crime fiction might differ from its English counterpart, and also how the books fit into the expansive canvas of international crime fiction.
