Course Description:Drawing from his latest book, "The Last Lighthouse Keeper," author Stuart McDowell shares the extraordinary life of Bill Owens, a keeper with the United States Lighthouse Service on California's coast for thirty-two years. Owens experienced the Great Depression, World War II, dirigible disasters, and plane crashes. He encountered shipwrecks and rum runners, isolation and hardship, Japanese submarines and wartime beach patrols, and a stormy conclusion to a career threatened by the coming of automated lighthouses. Reflecting on face-to-face interviews with Owens, McDowell crafts a riveting portrait of a man, a family, and an era of lighthouse men never to be seen again. |
