Join us for a revealing look at the Lewis and Clark Expedition, officially called the Corps of Discovery. It was a courageous and defining journey in the opening of the American West. Commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean, the expedition began in 1803 and returned in 1806, mapping the American West, documenting new plant and animal species, and establishing relationships with Native American tribes to open the west to American commerce. We will examine its origins in Jefferson's vision, the expedition's scientific and diplomatic missions, and the lasting consequences for Native peoples and U.S. expansion.
