Love, found and unrequited, has been a central theme behind some of the greatest musical compositions in history. The use of drugs has also affected the work of a number of the world's musical geniuses. And musical artists have deeply absorbed and responded to the horrors of war, especially in the 20th century. Each of the composers to be studied in this course had their own unique manner of expressing, in sound, their reactions to the human experience. We'll study Berlioz, Mahler, Shostakovich, Holst, Vaughan Williams, Penderecki, Gorecki, and The Beatles.
