Course Description:Supporting performers appear in roles designed to assist the main leads, aiding the protagonists to move the plot forward, while providing comic relief, information or antagonism. Some may play the same types of roles across many films whereas others may be chameleon-like, playing a variety of roles. Supporting actors are said to be the "secret sauce" to great storytelling. An ensemble cast is one with a number of performers who typically receive similar amounts of screen time, and usually is comprised of actors playing lesser roles, often as supporting actors. In this course, we will review and consider the roles of supporting performers and ensemble casts in: "Beat the Devil" (1953), "The Big Chill" (1983), "The Player" (1992), and "Knives Out" (2019). |
