*New! Crisis or Crossroads? Democracy’s Future | In Person (Ryan Ranch)

Course Description:

Crisis or Crossroads? Is American Democracy Sliding Into Authoritarianism—and What Can Be Done?

Is American democracy quietly sliding toward authoritarianism? This urgent question looms over our national life. In this course, we will move beyond partisan talking points and sensational headlines to examine the evidence of democratic decline. Grounded in political science research and current events, we will identify key warning signs of democratic erosion—from the breakdown of institutional norms and corruption to direct challenges to electoral integrity and the politicization of justice. We will also consider whether these trends are temporary or could continue to shape the nation’s future beyond the current administration.

This course does not stop at diagnosis. We shift from analysis to agency, moving from “What is happening?” to “What can be done?” We will explore the power citizens hold to fortify democracy and engage with strategies to address this critical moment.
