Course Description:

For almost two decades before the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin lived in London as a colonial agent for Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Georgia. He mingled with learned English scientists and philosophers, came to know many political and military leaders, and even testified before the House of Commons. When he returned to Pennsylvania, he brought British Enlightenment values that shaped his thinking and influenced his colleagues. After the Revolution, Franklin was appointed the young Republic's commissioner to France. The French recognized him as the personification of America, clad in frontier clothing, and he reigned as an early pop icon in Paris.
