Course Description:Elkhorn Slough, the tidal wetland at the geographic center of the Monterey Bay shoreline, is a hot spot of biological diversity and the focus of half a century of concerted conservation. Elkhorn Slough has been designated a Wetland of International Importance, a Globally Important Bird Area, a National Estuarine Research Reserve, a California State Wildlife Area, a Nature Conservancy Legacy Site, a State Marine Protected Area, and a part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This talk will describe why this recognition is focused here, reveal some of the hidden mysteries of the slough, and discuss the dynamic research and restoration going on today. |
