Course Description:Floodplains are low-lying lands next to rivers, streams and oceans. When left in a natural state, floodplain systems store and dissipate floods without adverse impacts on the surrounding environment. During a guided walk through the Carmel River floodplain at Palo Corona, freshwater scientist John Olson reveals how the varied elements within this ecosystem interact and how restoration efforts can help prevent flooding, increase climate resilience, and improve conditions for many species. (Note: We’ll meet at the Palo Corona Discovery Center. Involves walking approximately 3 miles with an elevation change of 100 feet.) |
