Course Description:In this very special offering, Russian scholar Elena Sheygal-Placzek presents an illuminating historical and cultural portrait of Ukraine. Conceived as a tribute to the courage and staunchness of the Ukrainian people, this four-part course will provide an introduction to the country’s history and geographical makeup while also exploring its national character and traditions. Dr. Sheygal-Placzek will also dive deep into Ukraine’s storied cultural heritage including its music, fine art, literature, and architecture. Images of Ukraine in Russian literature, music and art will conclude this revealing homage. |

Elena Sheygal-Placzek, Ph.D., is a retired professor of the Volograd University, Russia. Author of the "English-Russian Dictionary of U.S. Life and Culture," she has been a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley as well as an OLLI lecturer there and at California State University, Monterey Bay.
