Course Description:

Join us as we embark on a cinematic journey through Iran with a selection of captivating films spanning thriller, drama, comedy, and documentary genres, crafted by esteemed filmmakers. Along the way, we'll explore the rich cultural heritage of this ancient land, examining its tumultuous socio-political landscape marked by resilience against autocratic powers and the profound impact of sanctions and international isolation. In this four-part offering, we'll engage in screenings, discussions and analytical sessions to glean insights into Iran's complex narrative of defiance and endurance amidst global scrutiny.

Facilitator:

Ava Homa is an award-winning author, journalist, and activist. Her words have appeared in the "Globe and Mail," "Guardian," "BBC," "Literary Hub," and more. Her debut novel, "Daughters of Smoke and Fire," won the 2020 Silver Nautilus Award for fiction and was shortlisted for the 2022 William Saroyan Writing Prize. This groundbreaking work has been incorporated into university curricula at institutions such as George Mason University, the University of Toronto, and SMU.
