Course Description:In the first half of the 20th century, Alfred Stieglitz arguably did more to introduce modern art to an American public than any other single individual. From 1907-1917, his New York gallery, the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, later known as 291, staged some of the most important early exhibitions of modern art held in America, featuring artists like Rodin, Matisse, Cézanne, Picasso, and other European modernists. A photographer, Stieglitz wanted photography to be accepted as a fine art, but felt that American art could only benefit from being placed in the context of vanguard European art. We'll explore these exquisite works of modern art that resided on both shores. |
