Course Description:The deep ocean makes up about two-thirds of the Earth’s surface, and it forms volcanically at the midocean ridges. However, before long, the seafloor begins getting buried in sediment, a layer that thickens very slowly as the ocean crust ages. For the last 100 years scientists have probed the sediments of the ocean basins. Now, we're approaching a new era of mineral exploration as companies search for metals locked up in sedimentary rocks. Dr. James McClain examines the variety of deep sea sediments, how they form and accumulate, and how we may eventually use them. |
