Course Description:

Odessa, dubbed “the pearl by the sea” in a popular song, is a coveted jewel within Russian, Soviet, Ukrainian, and Jewish cultures. Sunny and beautiful, with its freedom-loving spirit, it is a city like no other. Odessa wit, Odessa language, Odessa humor, Odessa lifestyle. Unique and inimitable. Just say the word Odessa and people begin to smile. Throughout history it has mothered a multitude of talents and has given the world great musicians, writers, philosophers...and criminals. Join us as we explore what makes Odessa so special—its geography and history, architecture and monuments, cultural heritage and, most importantly, its people.

Facilitator:

Elena Sheygal-Placzek, Ph.D., is a retired professor of the Volograd University, Russia. Author of the "English-Russian Dictionary of U.S. Life and Culture," she has been a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley as well as an OLLI lecturer there and at CSU Monterey Bay.
