Course Description:Edward Gibbon's six-volume "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" is the definitive examination of the Roman Empire from its height to its ultimate fall in 1453. But Gibbon failed to explore the history of the Roman Republic that preceded and created the Empire. It, too, had a long and very significant history. Join us as we look at the political and military history of the Republic and examine how it was created and governed. We'll study its unique characteristics and its rise to a dominant position of power across the Mediterranean. The people who inhabited the Roman Republic had values that differed greatly from our own. What can we learn from them? |
