Course Description:

Shakespeare’s final tragedy, "Coriolanus", is his purest expression of a tragic form, Greek in origin, in which a hero meets a sudden and brutal reversal of fate. While researching Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra in Plutarch’s histories, the playwright’s eye was caught by the glittering but ultimately catastrophic career of a Roman general whose brilliance on the battlefield was matched only by his failings as a popular politician. As the soldier Aufidius, watching Coriolanus’s star plummet, balefully notes: “our virtues / Lie in th’interpretation of the time” (4.7.49-50). Our exploration will include the film "Coriolanus", directed by Ralph Fiennes, who also plays the leading role.
