Course Description:The two founders are John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. The feminist farmer is Abigail Adams. All three were intimately involved in the founding of the United States and the first three administrations of the fledgling republic. Through their voluminous correspondence and their various writings, as well as the labors of numerous historians, we learn a great deal about their lives, their thoughts, and the ideas and struggles that led to the American experiment. We will examine the struggle for independence, the efforts to enlist European support, and the challenges facing the Washington, Adams and Jefferson administrations. This also affords us an excellent opportunity to understand the early years of political conflict and polarization. |
