Course Description:This course will explore two of the most famous trials in history: the 1925 Scopes "Monkey Trial" and three trials involving Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde in 1895. The Scopes trial challenged the teaching of evolution in public schools and pitted not merely science against religion, but competing famous attorneys Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryant. Wilde's three trials began as a libel case brought by the writer and ended with him in prison and his career in tatters. These trials involved the intersection of faith, modernity, politics, culture, morality, religion, and identity. They continue to have surprising relevance and resonance today. |
