Course Description:In April 2025, after more than eight decades, the restored Western Flyer will return to the Gulf of California and retrace much of the historic 1940 voyage made by John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts. Steinbeck scholar Susan Shillinglaw will be on board the vessel and, upon her return, will revisit both of these expeditions, as well as a 2004 exploration that mirrored the original journey. Through lecture, readings and discussion, she invites us to reflect on the relevance of the boat's return, and the impact of this wondrous intersection of science and the arts. |
