Course Description:

Christianity was a new religion, born during the height of the Roman Empire. Despite being radically different from the Roman religion, challenged by Roman law and vilified by other religions, it thrived and spread throughout the Roman Empire. By 300 CE, while experiencing the most virulent persecution ever, approximately ten percent of the population of the Empire was Christian. Then something happened. It became legal and the official religion of the Roman Empire. Shortly thereafter, the Roman Empire in the West fell. Its emperors were gone, the army ceased to exist, Classical civilization melted away. But Christianity continued to flourish. How could this be? What brought this outlaw religion to official acceptance and how did it continue to exist once the Empire was no more?
