Course Description:

At least since the Ten Commandments, religions have asserted that there are moral truths. But if we use reason rather than faith to search for moral truths, then we must learn how to search for the truths of what is "the good." Plato and Aristotle laid out paths for us to consider, as did Kant, Bentham, and Mill, among others. In our generation, Robert Pirsig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" provided new thoughts about searching for ethical truths and left us with the now famous quote, "And what is good, Phaedrus, and what is not good—Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?" Join us as we use our reason and the wisdom of others to guide us. Where we'll end our search is unknown, but the journey will be both challenging and enlightening.
