Course Description:

The music of Gustav Mahler was some of the most powerful and emotive of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This revealing course provides an in-depth historical survey of Mahler's eleven symphonies, presented in two parts. We will trace the composer's stylistic evolution across all stages of his creative life and explore the defining characteristics of his music. Our analysis will focus on the programmatic, spiritual and emotional dimensions of the symphonies.
