Course Description:Jorge Luis Borges is a giant figure in the Magical Realism movement in Latin American literature. His short stories celebrate metaphysical and labyrinthine ways of knowing the world, and they question the existence of reality. Likewise, Borges plays with structures of linearity in his work while highlighting the fruitlessness of searching for meaning in life. To read Borges, one must forgo any commitment to time, chronology, rationality, or "the real world." The fun begins once your mind allows the material world to slip away. We'll read Borges's collection of short stories, "Collected Fictions" (1999). |
