Course Description:

This revealing lecture will explore how ocean tides have affected humankind throughout history, including their impact on warfare from ancient times up to the present, and then provide an overview of the science behind the tides. We'll examine how tides are predicted and what determines their nature, and uncover what governs the presence or absence of tidal maelstroms and tidal bores. The session will conclude with thrilling video footage of surfers riding the spectacular "Silver Dragon" tidal bore on the Qiantang River in China.
