Course Description:

The second golden age of music in England coincided with reforms in the Anglican church (Oxford Movement), where a need for fresh settings of anthems and service music blossomed into a period of great creativity and musical exploration. Secular Romantic poetry also flourished during this time, as did a rediscovery of Shakespeare and regional folk songs, inspiring some elegant choral settings unrelated to liturgical use. This four-part course will examine English choral music from the Victorian era through the end of the twentieth century. Composers including Elgar, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Howells, Britten, and Tavener will be explored.
