Course Description:

Mathematician, scientist, metaphysician, René Descartes is often called the founder of modern philosophy, and generations of students were introduced to the subject through his celebrated "Meditations on First Philosophy" (1641). Yet how many today have accepted his challenge to search for foundations through a radically personal exploration of doubt, the self, God, mind, rationality, and the essence of the material world? Join us for a six-week exploration of a work that revolutionized thought in the tumult of the 17th century and framed ideas that still shape our understanding of what it means to be human. Required text (not provided): "René Descartes, Meditations on First Philosophy."
