Course Description:

Blues historian Brian Simmons invites you to share in this opportunity to explore, honor and appreciate this unique contribution of African American culture to the musical world. In this four-part course, you will get a taste of the blues in the historical context of the experience of rural African Americans, including gospel and folk influences. We'll listen as the big band approach to the blues made its appearance and also experience the electrification of the blues that followed. Along the way, we'll learn about, and listen to, women and men considered giants in the field as well as some lesser-known performers who helped shape this storied musical genre.
