Course Description:King Cymbeline of Britain banishes his daughter Innogen's husband, who then makes a bet on Innogen's fidelity. Innogen is accused of being unfaithful, runs away, and becomes a page for the Roman army as it invades Britain…and so on. "Cymbeline," one of Shakespeare’s final plays, defies easy summary. Haunting and bittersweet, its plot is both labyrinthine and tragicomic. The series of breathtaking revelations at the end reflect the period’s vogue for intricate plots. lt is no wonder it is one of the less frequently staged plays of Shakespeare. Most directors find it flat-out intimidating. In our exploration, we will view the Royal Shakespeare Company’s celebrated 2016 production set in the reign of “Kymbeline,” the king who ruled southern England at around the time of Augustus Caesar. |
