Course Description:

At a key turning point in rock ‘n roll, sound recording began to reflect the creative impulses of three celebrated ensembles, without the pressure or concern for live reproduction. The Beatles released their concept album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1967), inspired by "The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds" (1966), changing the way artists created musical masterpieces through multiple tracks and the addition of musical sounds and effects. Pink Floyd released their landmark album "The Dark Side of the Moon" (1973) a few years later, emphasizing this shift in creativity and sound quality, giving birth to modern music recording as we know it today. This four-part series will focus on these three landmark albums, using audio and video examples to highlight their vast influence on the recording arts.
