Understanding Ukraine: Fiction of Kurkov (Closed)

Course Description:

Ukraine attained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then, Ukrainian authors have produced literature that intentionally sidesteps Russian and Soviet dogmas while developing unique imagery, ideas and storylines. Most Ukrainians speak and read both Russian and Ukrainian fluently, and Ukraine's writers often find it difficult to lay claim to a single "native tongue." We'll read Kurkov's "Death and the Penguin"; although Kurkov writes in Russian, he considers himself a Ukrainian author. We'll also read Zabuzhko's "Fieldwork in Ukrainian Sex"; she writes in Ukrainian. Both novels have been translated into English and are widely available.
