Course Description:

For over three centuries, opium was central to the lives of millions of people throughout the world, including many Europeans in the 19th century. In this course, we’ll track the spread of opium from the Middle East to Asia and finally to Europe. We’ll focus on its profound effect on poets, artists and musicians. People may be surprised to know that Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Charles Baudelaire and Jean Cocteau were addicts and that Byron, Shelley and Keats were frequent users of this mysterious substance.
