Course Description:

Ekphrastic Poetry vividly describes works of visual art in which the poet, through imaginative narration and reflection, amplifies and expands on the artwork’s meaning. In a continued exploration of this poetic form, our course will examine the encounter between these two art forms, focusing particular attention on poems responding to works of sculpture.

In a seminar setting, we will study reproductions of classical and modern sculptures that have inspired poets, including William Blake, Jorie Graham, John Keats, Wislawa Szymborska and others to “sculpt” their impressions with words. Copies of the poems will be provided. Suggested reading includes "Art and Artists" and "Poems About Sculpture" (Everyman’s Library Pocket Poets Series).
