Course Description:

In this course, we will listen to and discuss the different classifications of jazz and the myriad components that make up this fascinating art form. By the end of the course, we hope to have answered the timeless question: "What makes a song jazz?"

Facilitator:

Chris Hasegawa, PhD retired as Dean of Extended Education and International Programs at Cal State Monterey Bay. Prior to that position, he taught at the University of Oregon, CSU Sacramento and CSUMB. Since retiring, music has become a big part of Dr. Hasegawa’s life. A former professional saxophone player, he sings with the Secret Monterey Jazz Connection group, Monterey Peninsula Voices and plays with the Ukulele Songbirds.
