Course Description:

Beer is the oldest fermented beverage and is intimately tied to the rise of settlement societies. Grain, in fact, may have first been grown for beer production. Along the way, beer has helped foment cooperation, celebrations, improved health and prosperity. The recent rise of microbreweries has refocused interest in this important and ancient craft. This 3-session offering examines beer’s storied history and its influence on society, and concludes with a visit to Carmel Valley Brewing Company, Carmel Valley’s oldest brewery.

Dean Hatfield is the founder and chief brewer of Carmel Valley Brewing Company. Roger Luckenbach, PhD is an Emeritus Professor of Biology and former Director of the Biotechnology and Honors Science programs at Fresno City College.
