Dear Sweetie: The Place of Letters in Our Lives

Course Description:

When was the last time you sent or received a letter that had a stamp on its upper right-hand corner? Sure, bills arrive and sometimes we pay them via U.S. Mail. But what about the last time for a handwritten letter that begins with “Dear…,” is replete with cross-outs, and concludes with a signature. This course will begin with a reading from a trove of love letters that Patrice found following her father’s death—letters he saved, written to him by his wife during six months in 1965 when they were apart. We’ll then look at the place of letters historically, perusing a handful of famous letters; reread old letters we’ve saved; look at a memoir in letters, "The Book of Emma Reyes"; discuss the impact of the loss of letter writing; and write, as well as hopefully receive, a letter or two.
