Course Description:

Immensely popular in its day, "Henry VI" established Shakespeare as an important dramatist and inspired him to follow it with the rest of the “Henriad“ ("Henry IV & V"). The Wars of the Roses (1455–1487) were a series of English civil wars fought for the control of England’s throne between rival branches of the royal House of Plantagenet: the House of Lancaster (associated with a red rose), and the House of York (whose symbol was a white rose). The conflict stemmed from social and economic problems generated by The Hundred Years War. (Note: Is it any wonder post-colonial America was determined to avoid foreign entanglements?) In addition to exploring the plays, our class will view the new followup series to BBC’s acclaimed "Hollow Crown". The cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench, Hugh Bonneville, Sophie Okonedo, and Michael Gambon.
